Greenville charity robbed of trailer filled with tools

Posted: Updated:

Rebuild Upstate has completed more than 120 projects to help the community. Now its good work is at a standstill after hundreds of dollars in equipment was stolen, along with a trailer.

But now the non-profit organization does not know how it will continue it's work. The organization's trailer, with tools used to work on homes, was stolen late Tuesday night.

Operations director Nicholas Kulick said Rebuild Upstate helps the elderly, impoverished and handicapped with home repairs.

He said they have received 1,800 calls for assistance this year alone. "...We do just as much as we can with what we got,"  Kulick said.

The trailer, where many of the organization's tools were secured, was locked up at the time of the theft.

"We only have the one trailer - and probably over half of our tools are in that trailer. Probably about $1,500 worth of equipment," Kulick said.

Simpsonville Police Lieutenant Teddie Williams said thefts and break-ins are common this time of year.

There are certain things people should be aware if they witness a crime like this unfold.

"Try and get a good description of the person, what direction they leave, what they're wearing and what kind of vehicle they're driving and tag number if you can," Williams said.

Williams said keep your possessions put away and out of sight. He added that surveillance footage is also a big help to investigators.

"Security companies have cameras you can put out, that's really useful to us during investigations," Williams said. "Where we can go and help get assistance on those people and you have a real good video on them, like what they're driving, we can use that."

Real Upstate said it is still in shock their trailer was stolen.

"It's frustrating that someone would take from a non for profit who is trying to help people, just can't believe that," Kulick said.
