ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Sherry Sanders is speaking out after her daughter Joanie Holcombe is charged with murder in the death of her newborn daughter.

Twenty-three-year-old Joanie Holcombe is accused of burying her newborn and putting her in a plastic bag. Anderson County deputies arrested her last Sunday.

Sanders said she believes mental health played a key role her daughter's actions. Sanders said she is still horrified by what her daughter did.

"It's been horrible to know my daughter may have done something so drastic and inhuman," Sanders said.

Sanders said Joanie hid her pregnancy. When her mother had suspicions Joanie was pregnant, Joanie told her mom she was gaining weight.

"I asked her one day, was she pregnant and said 'No mother, I'm just getting fat and you're making feel self conscious.' She would wear coats, and bathrobes and what not. I just let it go because I was taking her word for it," Sanders said.

Sanders said her daughter lived a very private life and didn't share many personal facts about her life.

"Joanie was so private, she didn't want anyone knowing her business and now it's all out in such a horrible, horrible way," Sanders said.I just can't believe it happened."

Sanders and her family are now receiving death threats and she said she is scared.

"Having to walk out the door, and the first thing I see is yellow tape, it's overwhelming. To know my grandbaby was killed."

Sherry Sanders will be visiting Joanie for the first time since she was arrested this Tuesday.
