The second episode of the X-Files “Founders Mutation” was everything I hoped it would be! The underlying conspiracy stuff keeps growing, although it had a stand-alone episode feel that so many of us love about the original show. There was a lot of personal stuff for Mulder and Scully, so stop reading now if you don’t want SPOILERS! Let’s hash it out!
I want to start with the personal/emotional part of the episode, because I thought that was the most powerful. Scully and Mulder had a son over 15 years ago, but Scully had to give him up for an anonymous adoption for his protection. His name was William, and he is presumed to be still out there. Seeing Mulder and Scully have daydreams about what raising William would have been like was heart-breaking. I took it harder as a mom watching it than I could have back when I watched the show in high school that’s for sure. I thought it was interesting that Scully’s biggest fear was for the child to be part alien, while Mulder’s biggest fear was for his son to get abducted like his sister. It certainly shows how Mulder and Scully are different. Both have clearly been suffering the loss for a long time, so I really want to see some resolution!
At this point I really hope the 6 episode event ends with them finding their son. I think it would give Mulder and Scully closure. Even if they could just see him from afar and know that he is OK.
Now for the story… Wow, that was intense. Seeing the kids with all the deformities and genetic diseases was hard to watch. However, I’m sure the show did that on purpose. It makes you really feel for the kids and gain an even stronger desire for Mulder and Scully to uncover the truth.
The ringing in the ears was really interesting… as a way the alien hybrid boy Kyle could defend himself and others. I could have lived without the scene where the researcher stabs himself in the skull in the beginning, but it definitely had a big effect!
I have a question for all of the X-Files enthusiasts out there. I’m wondering where I have seen the actress who played the nurse Scully spoke with at the hospital. The nurse who was overseeing the pregnant women, and who contacted the Founder about the agents being there. I feel like she has been on X-Files before but can’t remember when!
The show is putting together a very intriguing story, and I feel even more interested in the outcome than in previous mythologies in the show.
