GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

When Ronnie Hart steps outside he has to be careful.

"It's just very backed up and it gets so busy," Hart said.

He lives off Suber Road in Greer and moved to the area about three years ago.

"It's convenient to town," he said. "I like the people around this area."

Recently, as he rolled down Suber Road, he saw a parked electronic sign that piqued his interest.

"I pay attention, but I don't know if anyone else does or not," he said.

The electronic sign is posted at the South Suber Road Recreational Park in Greer and it flashes an eye-catching message.

Greer police officers posted the sign there.

"Currently there are 27 fatalities for not wearing seat belts in the state so far this year," Clay Anderson said.

He's a traffic safety officer with the Greer Police Department and he also clocks speeders.

"The goal is just to get people to pay attention if they're driving along- get them thinking," Anderson said.

The safety initiative is aimed at getting people to slow down and buckle up.

"Those county roads that are just two lane roads - they don't have a lot of shoulder and those are some of the most dangerous roads," Anderson said.

So, just as drivers do, the sign will move to different areas of Greer.

"We want to get people's awareness now while we can and hopefully carry them into the summer with good habits," Anderson said.

Because when Hart saw the number of deadly wrecks, it became a sign for him to be more aware.

"To me, that's a lot," he said.
