BOONE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Boone Police Department said a man is in custody, accused of using an online ad to solicit a minor for sexual purposes.

Investigators said a suspicious ad was spotted on a popular website. The ad reportedly had a vulgar title and officials feared it could be related to a predator looking for children online.

An undercover officer responded to the ad, posing as a 14-year-old. They say 55-year-old John Edward Heelan responded and arranged to meet who he believed to be a 14-year-old girl in Boone.

Officers said they approached Heelan at the meeting location and conducted and interview, leading to his arrest. A search of Heelan's vehicle resulted in the seizure of evidence indicating he was there for sexual purposes, police said.

Heelan is charged with one count of felony soliciting of a child by computer and one count of indecent liberties with a minor.

Bond for Heelan was set at $50,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on March 3.

The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office assisted in the arrest.
