MAULDIN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

On the side of Julian Thomas Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Mauldin sits a garden. "Normally we have squash and tomatoes and potatoes and onions, and all kinds of things out here," Dr. Julian Thomas said.

Dr. Thomas said just a few days ago there were also three beehives, until they were stolen. "I came in on Saturday morning and sure enough the frames where the bees, beehives were standing... Were still here, but the bees were gone," Thomas said.

Staff members at the dentist office said each hive weighed at least 80 pounds and they were worth hundreds of dollars. "I just can't imagine anybody doing this. It has to be somebody that knows bees, because, you gotta know what you're doing if you're gonna steal a beehive without getting stung," Thomas said.

He said they have always put the vegetables from their garden at the front counter for their patients to take on their way out, and as they started their beehives this time last year, they were excited to add honey to their selection.

"You can't harvest honey the first year, so this was going to be our first year harvesting honey, and the whole idea was to supply the patients with honey, just small jars," said Thomas.

Now, they have to start from scratch.

Thomas said he thinks the thieves came in through a back path because they saw no activity on their security cameras.  The staff shared a post on their Facebook page on Saturday, about the stolen hives. They said they've had over 30 thousand views, and a lot of people sad they won't be getting their honey this season.

"We'll start again this spring and it's gonna take another year before we can start harvesting honey, but we'll keep that hive at a different location... not here obviously," said Thomas.

The office filed a report with the Mauldin Police Department. A public information officer for the department said they have no new information in the case at this time.

Thomas said the hives are a bit unique. He said they have copper tops on them, and said they have a pointed roof instead of the typical flat roofs. The hives are from 'Bee Well Honey' in Pickens.

Thomas said he is also offering a thousand dollar reward to anyone who can provide them with information to where the hives may be.
