PELZER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A rise in the number of pain pill deaths in Anderson County has the coroner concerned, and the latest victim is a teenager.

Stanley Shaw, 17, was found dead in his bedroom Sunday after his parents and the coroner say he overdosed on prescribed pills mixed with other drugs. Shaw's parents say he struggled with anxiety and was taking medicine for it. They also said he struggled with drug abuse.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore says Shaw's death highlights a growing problem in the county. In the last 14 months, 31 people have died from overdoses. Twenty nine of those deaths were accidental.

Shaw's parents, Anita and Roger Mills, say their son was getting ready to finish high school and marry his girlfriend.

"The last thing he told us was he loved us," Anita Mills says. "When you lose a child, it is something else... It is unbelievable."

"These deaths affect so many people," Shore says. "Most of these deaths are unexpected and most of these people are in the prime of their life."

Shore says the average age of victims is about 43 years old. All of the overdose victims in Anderson County in the last 14 months were Caucasian.
