SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

New businesses, construction projects, and high rise developments are going up in downtown Spartanburg.

The city's communications manager, Will Rothschild said it's all part of a big  revitalization project.

"It's been the most rapid sustained growth downtown that the city's ever had," said Rothschild.

He said the most recent development proposal to be approved by the city will be located in the parking lot next to Carriage House Wines.

"It's going to be a five story multi-use building with 30 residential units and 3,000 square feet of retail space," he said.

He said in the last 36 months, they've had 59 businesses open and they're expecting even more to come to this area.

"You see little businesses popping up, eateries, bars, boutiques," said Mark Johnsen, the co-owner of the RJ Rockers Brewing Company.

His brewery has been open since 2009, and he said he thinks the  AC Hotel by Marriot that is under construction across the street will boost business.

"We'll have to figure out how to deal with the typical downtown things but the positive thing about it is growth is growth and it's good for all of us," said Tony Forest, the owner of Carriage House Wines.

Forest's business sits directly next to the location for the new apartments, and he's been open for the past 10 years.

U.S. Census data shows the population has significantly grown in size. In 2010 there were over 36,000 people in Spartanburg. The most recent data from 2014 shows growth of over a thousand people, to 37,525. By 2020 the city anticipates 38,000 people living in the area.

"People want to see a lively, vibrant dynamic downtown, so there's a lot of excitement right now associated with what's going on down here," said Rothschild.

Overall, Rothschild said there around a dozen projects underway. A new crepery on Main Street is near opening their doors and six other residential units are being added to a historic downtown building.

A new business office space that will bring about 250 jobs to the area; it's plans were just announced this week. Among the historic buildings, new construction is planned to for two new restaurants and a grocery store.
