GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The family of a 5-year-old boy brutally assaulted and murdered in 1989 are pushing for law enforcement to reopen the cold case.

Justin Lee Turner's body was found March 5, 1989, in a camper on his father's property in Moncks Corner. There was an arrest made in the case at the time, but the charges were dropped.

Turner had been sexually assaulted and strangled, according to investigators.

Now, his surviving relatives who live in the Upstate are asking law enforcement to look at the case again.

"I remember him being a sweet little boy," said Turner's cousin, Amy Parsons, who was 9 at the time of his death. "Not knowing if there will ever be justice is difficult."

Parsons lives in Greenwood County.

The Berkeley Co. sheriff has said he is working with investigators to find new evidence in the case, and hopefully make an arrest.

"I've asked them to look into it again with a fresh set of eyes," said Sheriff Duane Lewis. "And maybe some new technology has been developed since then that we may can use to capture some of the physical evidence."

Parsons told FOX Carolina Justin Turner's mother passed away more than a decade ago. She said his death had an adverse effect on her health.

The family has set up a Facebook page  to help generate more attention for the 27-year-old case.
