Late runs lift Radford over USC Upstate 7-5 in baseball

Late Runs Lift Radford Past Spartans

Spartanburg, S.C. – A ninth inning rally by the USC Upstate baseball team fell short as the Spartans lost to Radford 7-5 on Friday at Harley Park.

Radford improves to 3-15 while Upstate falls to 8-11.

Upstate got on the board in the first inning after Daniel Fickas reached on a double with one out, advanced to third on a Cody Brittain single and scored on a James Fowlkes sacrifice fly.

Radford tied the game in the fifth inning on a two-run single by Shane Johnsonbaugh. Luke Wise reached earlier in the inning on an infield single.

Charlie Carpenter led off the sixth inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Hunter Gilbert base hit to left.

Danny Hrbek reached on a walk to begin the Radford eighth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following a pair of walks, Colby Higgerson reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring one run with another crossing the plate as a result of an Upstate error. Upstate got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning as Carpenter led off with a single and scored on a Beaver double.

The Highlanders added three runs in the ninth on a pair of triples and a wild pitch for a 7-3 lead. Upstate cut the deficit in half with two runs in the ninth inning on thanks to a Radford error and a Carpenter single. The Spartans had the bases loaded with two outs before a popout ended the game.

The Spartans stranded 12 runners on base while Radford left seven men the basepaths.

Carpenter led the Upstate offense, going 4-for-5 with four singles, two runs scored and an RBI. Brittain went 3-for-5 with three singles while Jake Beaver went 2-for-3 with a single and double. Fickas finished 2-for-4 with a single, double and two runs scored. Gilbert went 1-for-5 with a single and RBI while J.J. Shimko and Zach Krider each had a single.

Johnsonbaugh, Hrbek and Trevor Riggs each had two hits for Radford.

Travis McQueen (1-1) earned the win in relief, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Elijah Willingham (0-1) took the loss as he gave up two runs (one earned) with three walks, one hit and one strikeout in 1.1 innings. Daniel Bridgeman earned his second save of the year, retiring the final batter of the game.

Upstate will face Radford on Sunday at 1 p.m.
