Davidson knocks off Furman in baseball 15-4

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Clark Beeker pitched eight solid innings and received ample run support from his teammates, highlighted by a nine-run seventh inning, to help Davidson walk past Furman, 15-4, in Friday’s baseball series opener at Wilson Field.

Beeker and Davidson (8-9) trailed 3-0 midway thru the third inning but outscored Furman (8-9) 15-1 the rest of the way to cruise to the victory.

The Wildcats got on the board in the third inning on a Sam Foy RBI single and tied it at 3-3 an inning later on Aaron Tovsky’s two-run double off the bottom of the fence in right center field.

The game was knotted 4-4 after five innings before Davidson took the lead for good in the sixth on another Tovsky two-run double on an 0-2 offering by Paladin starting pitcher Will Gaddis.

Furman’s bullpen imploded in the seventh as four pitchers combined to give up nine runs, made possible by four hits and six free passes — consisting of four walks and two hit batsmen — and an error.

Davidson, which entered the game batting just .231 as a team, collected 14 hits in the contest, led by by Lee Miller’s 3-for-5 performance that including three RBI and two runs.  Tovsky doubled twice and tallied five RBI, and Foy went 2-for-4, drove in two, and scored two runs.

Jabari Richards accounted for two of Furman’s seven hits to run his string of multi-hit games to five.

Beeker (4-0) claimed the victory, allowing four runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits over eight innings.

The loss went to Gaddis (2-2), who allowed six runs on 10 hits, over 5 1/3 innings.

The Paladins and Wildcats play Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
