Terriers fall at Gardner-Webb 5-3

Wofford Baseball Falls 5-3 At Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – On Friday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 5-3 by Gardner-Webb at John H. Moss Stadium. The Terriers scored twice in the top of the first inning, but the Runnin’ Bulldogs scored three in the bottom of the first to take a lead they would not relinquish. 

Wofford is 12-7 on the season, while Gardner-Webb is 18-2 overall. The Terriers were led by Max McDougald and McClain Bradley with two hits each, while Matt Milburn had seven strikeouts on the mound. Brad Haymes threw a complete game for the Runnin’ Bulldogs with eight strikeouts and Collin Thacker had three RBIs on two hits.

Alec Paradowski led off the top of the first with an infield single and Max McDougald walked. After moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, a ground out by Brett Hash drove in Paradowski and McDougald scored on a throwing error on the play for a 2-0 lead. Gardner-Webb opened the bottom of the first with a pair of singles. A double by Collin Thacker with one out drove in both runners to tie the game and an RBI single gave the Runnin’ Bulldogs a 3-2 advantage.

Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second inning. Gardner-Webb added a run after Taylor Fisher reached on an error, moved to second on the throw, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error for a 4-2 lead. To open the third inning, Alec Paradowski reached on an error and Max McDougald had an infield single. Carson Waln bunted to advance the runners, but they were unable to score.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs went down in order in the bottom of the third. Demetrius Jennings led off the Wofford half of the fourth inning with a single, but was stranded at third. After Gardner-Webb was retired in order to end the fourth inning, Wofford went in order in the top of the fifth. The Runnin’ Bulldogs had a double from Tyler Best with one out. Kody Ruedisili robbed a home run as it went over the fence in centerfield for the third out.

After the Terriers were retired in order in the top of the sixth inning, the Runnin’ Bulldogs had a single with one out before the runner was caught stealing second base. Chandler Engel led off the top of the seventh with a single, but was picked off first base. Wofford left one runner on base as the game reached seventh inning stretch. Gardner-Webb opened the bottom of the seventh with a single, but the runner was left on second base.

Max McDougald led off the eighth inning with an infield single and Alex Malsch came in to pinch run. Malsch stole second and with two outs a single by McClain Bradley drove in the run for a 4-3 game. The Runnin’ Bulldogs opened the bottom of the eighth with a walk. An RBI single by Collin Thacker pushed the lead to 5-3. Gardner-Webb had the bases loaded with two outs when a strikeout ended the scoring chance. Wofford was retired in order to end the game.

Wofford starting pitcher Matt Milburn (4-1) went seven innings with five runs allowed on nine hits. He struck out seven batters and walked one. Jordan Accetta threw an inning with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.

Brad Haymes (4-0) started for the Runnin’ Bulldogs and went the complete game. He allowed three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Gardner-Webb improves to 17-0 at home this season.

The three-game weekend series against Gardner-Webb will continue on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Wofford, with the final game on Sunday at Gardner-Webb with a 5:00 p.m. first pitch.
