HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Members of First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville and other congregations took turns carrying a large wooden cross on Good Friday.

Believers carried the 6-foot cross in silence.

The journey began and ended at the church on Sixth Avenue, where the cross was placed in the church's Christian Life Center.

A police escort assisted - blocking off roads as people made their way down Main Street.

Participants then enjoyed freshly-baked Hot Cross Buns, a traditional Easter sweet roll.

"My hope is it that it will continue to grow beyond this church. We have several churches participating this year and we expect that the numbers of walkers is going to grow and so my hope is that next year even more churches will participate," Pastor Mark Ralls said.
