SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Even though 12-year-old Jane Montgomery is on spring break, she's still catching up on some work by writing thank you notes.

"I like to write," Montgomery said.

She's using a pen, but it's a story about the promise of a pencil that initiated the thank you notes.

"Pencils of Promise builds schools in developing countries to educate children," she said.

Pencils of Promise is a foundation created by Adam Braun. He traveled to more than 50 countries and handed out pencils to children after a boy told him it's what he wanted most.

"I just feel like a lot of people in the United States take their education for granted," Montgomery said.

Braun also wrote the book The Promise of a Pencil and created the foundation which now helps educate children in developing countries. Montgomery got
the book from her father and she said it inspired her.

"I really enjoyed the book and I thought I wanted to do more than just the $100 donation," she said.

So, she decided she wanted to build a school and hosted a fundraiser.

"If anybody donated, they got a pack of pencils as kind of like a thank you," she said.

Her goal was to raise $25,000, but she's raised more than $28,000.

"The money that goes over will help sponsor teachers and help children go to the school and provide them safe transportation and supplies," she said.

Those who attended the fundraiser voted to build the school in Guatemala and Montgomery
decided to name the school, Sparkle City School.

"We're in Spartanburg and the nickname for Spartanburg is Sparkle City," she said.

And the philanthropist now has a promise she's kept.

"To donate to programs that help people," she said.

Montgomery started the fundraiser in December and it ends May 1.Construction for the school is expected to start in about a year and when it's finished
Jane plans to travel to Guatemala to see the school she helped build.
