LOUDON, N.H. (AP) - Kyle Busch earned a berth in the second round of NASCAR's playoffs with a dominant victory Sunday at New Hampshire Motorspeedway. Busch slipped through smoke from a multi-car crash on the backstretch that knocked out Martin Truex Junior's run at a second straight win and won in the Number 18 Toyota for the third time this season.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Drew Brees stood on the Saints sideline for the national anthem. His hand was firmly over his heart. Nearly a dozen teammates sat behind him on the bench in protest of recent remarks made by President Donald Trump. Brees called Trump's recent comments about NFL players "unbecoming of the office of the President of the United States." But he doesn't agree it's right to sit for the anthem
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Drew Brees shredded the league's top-ranked defense, throwing for 220 yards and three touchdowns as the New Orleans Saints defeated the previously unbeaten Carolina Panthers 34-13 Sunday. Brees led six scoring drives and threw TD passes to Michael Thomas, Brandon Coleman and ex-Panthers wide receiver Ted Ginn Junior as the Saints avoided an 0-3 start. Carolina had only allowed six points in its previous two games.
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Thomas Sirk threw for 426 yards and three touchdowns, and East Carolina held off UConn 41-38 Sunday in the conference opener for both teams. Sirk, a graduate transfer from Duke, connected receiver Davon Grayson for 223 yards and scores of 17, 24 and 75 yards. They also teamed up on a 46-yard flea-flicker to set up another score. The Pirates led 41-21 in the third quarter.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Number 7 Georgia and Number 9 TCU jumped into the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this season and Florida State dropped all the way out of the rankings after starting 0-2. Alabama remained Number 1 and won back some of the support it lost last week to Number 2 Clemson.
