LYMAN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A simple story reads as much more than just a story for little ones at Middle Tyger Community Center in Lyman. At least that's what Debbie Strickland believes.

"It's just like you're building a house, you've got to build that foundation very strong," Strickland said.

She's the childcare director for This is My Child childcare program at the center.

"We have children from ages six weeks up to the age of three," Strickland said.

And now administrators will extend the curriculum to 3K.

"They can have math, they can have literacy, and they can have science," she said.

Young parents who are in high school working on their G.E.D., college degree, or are low-income working families enroll their children into the program.

"This offers them the opportunity to get a high quality early childhood education for their child at a lower cost," Strickland said.

Programs at the center are funded through private donations because the center is a non-profit organization. State law only allocates money for 5K to 12th grade, so 3K programs aren't funded by the state.

"I would love to see more public funding than what there is currently for the early years," Andrea Moore said.

She's the executive director of the Middle Tyger Community Center.

"By expanding and being able to serve a larger number of children we'll be able to serve a wider-range of families," Moore said.

She says the new 3K curriculum will be different from other 3K programs because it will be available during the school year and will follow a Spartanburg District 5 schedule.

"The more we learn about brain development of children the more we know now the importance of what happens in those early years of life," Moore said.

The 3K program will start this August with limited spaces and anyone can apply. For more information on available programs click on this link.
