SALUDA, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The rushing water at Big Bradley Falls in North Carolina were a dangerous a place for one hiker. Crews responded after several hikers came across the man disoriented and badly injured on Monday.

"His wrist was broken clearly. His arm was seperated from his hand his hand was over here and his arm was over here... his head was bleeding pretty badly," said Blake Johnson who found the man with another hiker.

Johnson and a friend walked down to the falls when they came across the injured hiker. Polk County officials said he fell 50 feet. He remains in critical but stable condition suffering a head injury and several broken bones.

"It just told me I need to stay aware of my surroundings and stay safe... read the signs," said Johnson.

Signs are posted along the trails at Big Bradley Falls, warning about the unprotected falls and that people have died falling from them. In Greenville crews at the Boiling Springs Fire District headquarters on Pelham Road,  said they are well trained in rescues just like this.

"We've learned to check all the little places along the trails that may create a hiding place or a rest haven, instinct takes over," said Caption John Tripp. He said they assists in rescues in other counties outside of Greenville.

Tripp said the most important guidance he has for hikers is to prepare. "You need to formulate a plan... okay, you need to tell someone, where you're going," said Tripp.  In addition to a plan, there are also items you should have with you on a hike.

"Tons of different places to go hiking around the area so make sure you get the right map,"said Jay Fergusson a manager at Half-Moon Outfitters in Greenville.

He also recommends to have  a compass, food and water are also good to have, he says they can also give you advice about certain trails.

"I see people all the time who have tons of experience in the woods... you may fall and break a leg and you can't get yourself out, you may not have cell phone service, so having enough knowledge to be able to take care of yourself out there is important," said Fergusson.
