ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Once a week, Ralph Melbourne volunteers with Meals on Wheels Anderson, delivering lunch to the elderly, disabled and homebound in anderson.

Johnnie Crosby, 93, is a longtime client.

"It's a help, not only to me but to other people who may be more feeble," Crosby said as she received her daily lunch delivery from Melbourne.

Meals on Wheels Anderson, which delivers close to 600 meals a day, will not be taking on new clients for now, due to a 17 per cent deficit.

Executive Director Laurie Ashley said the reason for the deficit is a lack of increase in donations from the community and a rise in food prices.

"For thirteen years, we have not had this type of situation to happen that we were not able to accept new recipients," said Ashley, who added the organization has been in Anderson for 40 years.

Ashley says donations are still coming in, but only steadily.

Existing clients will not stop getting meals during the slowdown, but Ashley said no new clients will be added. People who need food will be referred to other charitable organizations in the area until MOW can get back on its feet.

Ashley said it's important to prepare for the future.

"We know that the baby boomers are beginning to be at an age where they are gonna need our service," she said. "What we are asking the community to do is to sustain Meals on Wheels for the long haul ... so that as many people as possible who need our service will be served."
