Local family hosts 'adoption yard sale'

It's been a week and a half of moving boxes, clothes and furniture from the Jackson family's home in Greenville Co. to Greenville Christian Fellowship church.

The family was working hard Friday to finish pricing items for their not-so-typical yard sale coming up Saturday.

Family friend Melinda Salle gave the Jacksons the idea.

"She came to us and said 'you really need to consider having an adoption fundraiser yard sale,'" said Jonathan Jackson. "My wife and I have talked about adopting a child for a few years. We both have prayed about it a lot, and feel like it is definitely the right thing to do."

The cost to adopt a child from China is great; $30,000 to be exact. When the community heard their story and that they were having a yard sale where proceeds would go toward adopting, donations for the yard sale came pouring in.

"I'm thinking 4 or 5 boxes...We'll put them in our living room," said Jackson. "I realized that i had tremendously underestimated the response."

Yes, the community heard their story and stepped up.

Salle, who adopted 2-year-old Sam from China, said she's thrilled to be helping her friends adopt in such an unusual way.

"We know it's gonna be very, very worthwhile when they bring their baby boy home," Salle said.

Costs for adopting a child can be seemingly astronomical. Local adoption agencies tell us it can range anywhere from $25,000 to $50,000 dollars when all is said and done.

But many don't realize how ready their community is to help with that cost. Grace Church has their own store front on Wade Hampton Blvd., chock full of free clothing, toys, and baby food; everything new adoptive and foster parents would need.

"Our community is behind this," said Beth Drake, resource care licensing specialist for Grace Church. "I may not be taking a child into my home, but I can do something ... All of us can do something to help children who are in need."

The adoption yard sale benefiting the Jackson family will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Greenville Christian Fellowhship located at 2220 State Park Rd. Saturday, May 21.

There are several resources families who want to adopt can use to receive grants that will help offset the cost of adoption.
