GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Kevin Coulter pitched a complete game and Kyle Lewis hit a two-run first inning home run to propel Mercer past Furman, 6-1, in a Southern Conference Tournament winner’s bracket game Thursday evening at Fluor Field.

Furman (28-29) will now play UNCG in a 7:00 p.m. Friday elimination game.

Coulter (8-3), a freshman right-hander, checked Furman on seven hits and needed just 96 pitches to go the distance.  He recorded only one strikeout and walked one.

Lewis, the two-time SoCon Player of the Year, gave Mercer (37-21) all the runs it would need in the first when he belted the first pitch he saw from Paladin starter Matthew Quarles over the wall, just beyond the right field foul pole.  It was his 19th long ball of the season and gave the Bears a 2-0 lead.

Trey Truitt’s RBI double in the fourth made it 3-0, and an inning later Ryan Hagan’s squeeze bunt allowed Lewis to score and give Mercer a 4-0 advantage.

Furman got on the board in the sixth after Sims Griffith singled and Jake Crawford doubled.  Sky Overton’s groundout allowed Griffith to cross the plate, but Coulton kept it there by getting Jordan Simpson on a groundout.

Mercer combined three walks, two hit batsmen, and a wild pitch to push across two more runs in the eighth for 6-1 advantage.

Coulton wrapped up his stellar performance by retiring the Paladins in order in the ninth.

Danny Edgeworth had two of Mercer’s seven hits, and Lewis drove in three and scored twice.

Griffith, Crawford, and Griffin Davis had two hits apiece for Furman, which also had seven hits.

Quarles (7-7), who beat Mercer in the regular season, pitching seven innings of two-hit ball in a 4-0 win in Macon on Apr. 24, suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.  He walked five and struck out three.
