Terriers baseball season comes to an end in 9-6 loss to UNCG

The Terriers couldn't hold off UNC-Greensboro in the 7th inning, when the Spartans broke open a tie game with four runs.

Wofford fell to UNCG 9-6 in the Southern Conference Tournament at Fluor Field which eliminates them from postseason play.

Wofford Baseball Ends Season With 9-6 Loss To UNCG

GREENVILLE, S.C. – On Thursday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team’s season ended with a 9-6 loss to UNCG in the Southern Conference Tournament at Fluor Field. The Spartans broke open a tie game with four runs in the top of the seventh inning and held the Terriers to only two runs over the final five innings.

Wofford finishes the season 30-28 overall. UNCG, the #3 seed in the tournament, is 38-20 on the season and advance to play either Furman or Mercer on Friday. The Terriers had eleven hits, with two each from Derek Hirsch, Kody Ruedisili and Demetrius Jennings, but left eleven runners on base. The Spartans, who lead the nation in batting average, had 19 hits in the contest and eight of them went for extra bases.

The Spartans had a double with two outs in the first inning, but a strikeout ended the top half. Alec Paradowski singled to begin the Wofford half of the first and Derek Hirsch followed with a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and a ground out by McClain Bradley scored Paradowski for a 1-0 lead. UNCG added a single in the top of the second, but the runner was picked off.

In the bottom of the second, Kody Ruedisili had double with two outs. The Spartans were retired in order in the top of the third inning. With one out in the bottom of the third, Derek Hirsch and Brett Hash had back-to-back singles. A fly ball and strikeout ended the third frame. UNCG led off the fourth with a single and a triple by L.J. Kalawaia tied the game at 1-1. With one out, a fielder’s choice resulted in Kalawaia out at home. An RBI double down the right line gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead in the middle of the fourth.

Cody Miller led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and Mack Nathanson followed with a single. With the infield in, a single by Kody Ruedisili scored Miller to tie the game and Nathanson moved to third. Demetrius Jennings was safe at first on a bunt and Nathanson scored on the play to give Wofford a 3-2 lead. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts advanced the runners and scored Ruedisili for a 4-2 score.

The Spartans singled to open the fifth inning. With one out, three straight singles tied the game at 4-4. After a runner was caught stealing second, a ground out ended the top half with a pair of runners stranded. Max McDougald walked with one out in the bottom of the fifth. He stole second, but a strikeout ended the inning. In the top of the sixth, the Spartans had a pair of singles.

Demetrius Jennings doubled off the wall in left center with one out in the bottom of the sixth, missing a home run by about two feet. Derek Hirsch walked with two outs, but a fielder’s choice ended the inning. A solo home run by Cesar Trejo to lead off the seventh inning gave the Spartans a 5-4 lead. A double was followed by an RBI single for a 6-4 game. A two-run homer by Dillon Stewart to over the wall in center gave UNCG an 8-4 advantage. A double play was followed by a double, but a strikeout sent the game to the seventh inning stretch. Wofford was retired in order for the first time in the game in the bottom of the seventh.

The Spartans led off the eighth with a double and had two runners on after a hit by pitch, but a double play ended the top half. Kody Ruedisili walked in the bottom of the eighth and stole second. After a single by Demetrius Jennings, the runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. A fly ball and strikeout ended the eighth inning for the Terriers. UNCG added a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single for a 9-5 lead. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, McClain Bradley tripled to right center and a ground out by Max McDougald made it a 9-5 game. A solo home run by Cody Miller with two outs cut the score to 9-6. Mack Nathanson was hit by a pitch, but a fly ball ended the game. 

Wofford starting pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan threw 4.1 innings with four runs allowed on nine hits and a pair of strikeouts. Elliot Lance (6-2) went 1.2 innings and gave up three runs on five hits. Jordan Accetta added two-thirds of an inning with one run scored on three hits. Adam Scott went the final 2.1 innings with one run allowed on to hits, along with two strikeouts.

Matt Frisbee started for UNCG and went three innings with four runs scored on seven hits. Chad Sykes (5-2) threw five innings with two hits allowed and nine strikeouts. Collin Woody closed the game and gave up two runs on two hits in the ninth inning.

The Terriers reached the 30 win mark for the third straight season for the first time in school history and also had back-to-back .500 or better records in the Southern Conference for the first time. It was the final contest for eight seniors: Jacob Condra-Bogan, Connor Foltyn, Derek Hirsch, Demetrius Jennings, Matt Milburn, Alec Paradowski, Josh Simpson, and Will Stillman. The class recorded 121 wins in four years, making them the winningest class in school history.
