GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Jimmy Fife has had a tough week.

"Hours and hours of crying, one hour of sleep in 24 hours," said Fife.

That's because his wife of 30 years, Joyce, is fighting for her life.

A former EMS worker, Fife was listening to his emergency scanner at home, purely out of habit. Suddenly, he heard about an accident on highway 17  in Elberton.

"Then, I heard that Greenville life flight was coming in for the patient," he said. That patient was his wife.

"Pretty traumatic, I was teared up," he said. "I was surprised she was alive." Driving down the road, she was hit by a driver traveling at a high rate of speed. Her car was mangled, and Joyce was paralyzed. "She was very vocal, said her back hurt, her chest hurt and she could not feel her legs," recalled her husband. The incident report from Georgia State Patrol says the driver who caused the accident was distracted.

"[The driver who caused the accident] said she looked down at her radio for a moment," said Fife.

Proof that even the slightest distraction can change a life forever.

"I see the carnage from distracted driving," said Fife, who warned everyone traveling on the roads this holiday weekend to turn off their phones and focus on the road.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise funds for Joyce's recovery. The page can be accessed by clicking here.
