COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Federal regulators have given the first of several levels of approval to a Virginia-based power company's proposed merger with an embattled South Carolina utility after the failure of a multibillion-dollar nuclear project. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Friday ruled that the combination of SCANA Corp. and Dominion Energy, Inc. "is consistent with the public interest and is authorized."
FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a man shot by a police officer in the parking lot of a South Carolina hotel has died. Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela said the man fired at the officer first at the Hilton Garden Inn around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken said 68-year-old Jethro Benjamin died a few hours later at the hospital.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has ordered the state's Medicaid agency to continue covering "necessary medical care and important women's health and family planning services." Media outlets report McMaster also late last week ordered the state Department of Health and Human Services "to terminate abortion clinics as Medicaid providers." The move comes after the Republican vetoed $16 million in family planning funds from the state budget.
ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (AP) - A woman has died after she was thrown from a boat and run over along the South Carolina coast. Charleston County officials say 37-year-old Stephanie Rechtin of Mount Pleasant died in the boating crash Saturday. The Department of Natural Resources says Rechtin was thrown from the boat she was rising in near Dewees Island inlet with her family when the boat apparently hit an oyster bed.
