GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) - An aluminum plant in South Carolina is hiring workers again even though it is operating at half of its capacity. Century Aluminum has resumed hiring at its Goose Creek plant after President Trump imposed tariffs on foreign aluminum imports. Century president and CEO told analysts the tariffs are having their intended effect, allowing American industry to reinvest for long-term competitiveness.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Searchers have found the body of a teen who fell from a boat on a river near the South Carolina coast. Charleston County officials say the body of 17-year-old Joseph Chomyn of the Isle of Palms was found Monday morning near a landing on Johns Island. Chomyn had fallen from a boat in the Stono River on Saturday evening. The cause of death has not been determined.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Four Republicans and three Democrats are seeking their parties' nomination for a vacant state Senate seat in South Carolina. Republican Columbia Sen. John Courson resigned in June after pleading guilty to misconduct in officer related to his use of campaign funds. The district covers parts of Richland and Lexington counties.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A man has been arrested and charged with kidnapping after a woman told police he held her in a South Carolina motel room for about a month. News outlets reported that Spartanburg police were called to a motel Sunday night where the woman told officers she had been choked, hit, placed in handcuffs and pepper sprayed. Forty-year-old Ryan Cornelius Sharpe, who was also charged with domestic violence, denied that he had prevented the woman from leaving the motel room.
