CHESNEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Chris Griffin was just 21 years old when he was riding his motorcycle in Spartanburg, near Valley Falls Road last October. He was then struck by a driver.

"He's not my actual uncle but he was my dad's best friend, and he meant a lot to me," said Breanna Cromer, a family friend of the rider. To her, Griffin was an uncle.

He suffered severe head trauma and later died from his injuries,. His death struck a nerve with the 14-year-old, who is active in South Carolina pageants.

"It's my uncle, and the fact that almost everybody in the family rides motorcycles," said Cromer.

The 2016 South Carolina Cinderella Ambassador said she will soon be competing to become Miss SC Teen and said she is required to have a platform, and her uncle's death triggered an idea.

"I've dedicated my life to trying to get awareness out about motorcycle safety to teens and the community," she said.

Breanna said she wants to go into schools to talk about her platform and get the word out. She's calling it 'Ride Safe-Ish', because she said it's what her uncle always said before a ride.

"To me that means not everybody is going to take the time to take that extra two seconds and look and make sure there's no one or take the extra time to make sure that everyone is going to be safe," said Cromer.

According to statistics from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, this year in South Carolina there have already been 49 motorcyclist deaths on roads in the state. This time last year there had been 52, and in 2014, there were a total of 84 deaths from motorcycle accidents.

"Not only do motorcycles have to be safe, other cars have to watch out for the motorcycles too," said Cromer. "You always have to be safe, and taking that two extra seconds always helps."
