Local company offers equipment used in mass casualty situations

GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The horrifying mass murder in Orlando over the weekend have people asking "What would I do if I were caught in the fray?"

Shannon Seidel with Greer-based North American Rescue said it's not uncommon for local law enforcement and regular citizens to come in and train for when disaster strikes.

"We try to focus on the people who help others," Seidel said. "We just want to make sure people are prepared. Everyone should feel empowered to not just take a CPR class but to learn more about first aid and or first responder type training."

Between 2000 and 2013 there were 160 active shooter situations, according to statistics from the FBI. With that number growing, Seidel said it is more important now than ever for individuals, not just law enforcement, to be prepared.

Seidel says too often, first aid kits at schools, businesses and places of entertainment just don't make the grade."Lives are lost because equipment is not available," she said.

Seidel said the most important piece of equipment she believes everyone should have--a tourniquet.
