GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Joey Meek pleaded guilty in April after failing to tell law enforcement of his friend, Dylann Roof's plans to kill African-American parishioners at Emanuel A.M.E. church last year.

"[Roof] was just saying he wanted segregation, he wanted a race war, he wanted to be white with white and black with black," Meek told news crews shortly after the massacre in 2015.

It's a crime Greenville County Crimestoppers coordinator Tony Lee says could have possibly been prevented, if someone had spoken up.

"We'd much rather ... get that piece of information and pass it on to the right people than something happen like what happened down here ... and no one know about it," said Lee.

This week the wife of Omar Mateen, the man authorities say committed the worst mass shooting in modern American history in Orlando Sunday, is also under scrutiny about what she may have withheld from authorities.

"You could face criminal charges," said Lee.

The FBI has several ways for people to report suspicious activity on their website. There's even a smartphone app called See Something, Send Something that connects you with law enforcement anonymously if you see something suspicious.

"We normally average a month between 120 and 150 tips," said Lee.

Lee says Crimestoppers takes all phone and online tips seriously.

"Anytime we take a tip, we're gonna pass it on...We're not gonna sit on it and say 'well, that doesn't sound legit,'" said Lee.
