CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

You hear the warnings about dogs freaking out on the Fourth Of July but for one family in Clemson they learned the hard way.

Jim Oswald, who owns Palmettos Smokehouse and Oyster Bar, said he and his wife left their two Border Collies at home, alone while they worked at their restaurant on the Fourth. Oswald said that without really thinking it through, they shut the doors to their bedroom and their son's room.

"We wanted to keep the dogs out so they wouldn't mess around in our beds," explained Jim Oswald.

But that might not have been the best idea since Oswald said Scout's safe place just happens to be under their bed. He said the 7-year-old Border Collies' backup is under their son's bed.

While there wasn't a firework show in Clemson, since they shot them off on Saturday, Oswald didn't think much about it.

Now looking back he figures some of his neighbors likely set off fireworks which  stressed Scout out.

Scout decided to do anything possible to get into one of the bedrooms. In the pictures posted on Facebook by Oswald,  you can see where Scout ripped the molding off the door frame.

Oswald admits this was one of those DIY projects and he never properly pinned in the decorative side of the frame.

Oswald said when he and his wife returned home they found Scout cowering behind the chair as if he knew he had done something wrong. You can see that in the second picture Oswald posted.

But he said there's no way her or his wife could have been mad at Scout for something that in the end was their fault.

"We definitely learned a lesson," explained Oswald.
