BARNESVILLE, GA (FOX Carolina) -

A determined, homeless teen brought a Georgia community together with his compelling story and humble spirit.

When Barnesville, GA police officers found him living in a tent on Gordon State College campus July 9, things could have taken a very sour turn for homeless teen Fred Barley. Thankfully, the compassion of campus police officer Dicky Carreker and Barnesville police officer Maria Gebelein helped Barley get the help he needed to get back on his feet.

Barley had spent 3 days camping in his tent before being discovered by police officers. The 19-year-old had ridden 6 hours from Conyers, GA to Gordon State College campus on a 20-inch bicycle with nothing more than two duffel bags of his belongings, two gallon jugs for water, a box of cereal, a tent and hopes of finding a job in time for school to start and dorms to open on July 18. A tremendous undertaking in the July heat, for anyone.

Upon discovering Barley, officers learned that he would be starting his second semester at Gordon State. Barley wanted to major in Biology.

Officers Carreker and Gebelein took Barley to a local motel and, moved by the teen's willpower, pitched in and paid for him to stay for two nights.

Not long after Officer Carreker posted the teen's story to Facebook, an outpour of Barnesville community eager to help emerged in response. The Barnesville community has united to provide Barley with gift cards, food, school supplies, clothing, a new mountain bike and a few community members are even working to get Barley his own car.

With the help and good faith of the Barnesville community, Barley has a place to rest his head until Monday when will be able to move into dorms early, and he's even landed a job at a local pizza spot.
