Veterinarians warn pet owners: Keep dogs cool this weekend

GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Veterinarians at Blue Ridge Animal hospital said it is probably a good idea to just keep pets indoors this weekend with temperatures soaring into the triple digits.

If you decide to walk your dog, do so in the morning or later at night as temperatures cool, said Dr. James Holtzclaw, associate veterinarian at Blue Ridge Animal Hospital in Greenville.

"If the dog is excessively panting to the point where the dog is almost exhausted and you notice that it is a 100 degree day, you should definitely intervene," said Holtzclaw. "Get water on the dog and in the dog."

Holtzclaw said pet owners should act fast if a dog is unresponsive and get the animal to a veterinarian.

'Cool the core body temperature down with ice or with cool water," he said. "You need to do it quickly. The quicker you bring the temperature down the better the prognosis."

Blue Ridge Animal Hospital sees five or six animals suffering from heat stroke each year, said Holtzclaw.
