GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

At 89 years old, Agnes Dietrich gets around pretty well. But, she still needs a little bit of help around the house.

"We moved here in '75," she said. "I would feel awful if I had to move out of my home."

Sarah Abrams is her home care giver. She works with Upstate Home Care Solutions, an agency that provides long-term care for those who want to stay in their homes.

"I clean up her breakfast dishes, and help her in the shower, and help her get dressed, and go to the grocery store... We've become very close over the past year," Abrams said. "I love it, I just always had a passion for taking care of people."

"They can still be independent and feel like they're in control of their lives, but have the help and care they need through us," she said.

The idea for home care came from James Bennett, he's the owner of the agency.

"My mother was a primary caregiver for both my dad and my grandmother at the same time," Bennett said.

He and his family helped, but he says it got tough.

"Not every family has the resources or the family dynamic to be able to take care of their loved one," he said.

According to AARP, American Association of Retired Persons, there are more than 2 million baby boomers who are about to hit 70 years old.

"For the next 10-15 years 10,000 people will turn 65 every day," Bennett said."They want to be at home. They feel safe at home, there's hope at home."

And he says some families struggle with how to pay for care.

"I try to identify if they qualify for any programs available throughout the community," he said."It doesn't matter if you $10 in the bank or a $1 million in the back- the act of caring is the same."

And that's why Dietrich now thinks of Abrams as family.

"They don't ever leave me high and dry," Dietrich said.

Bennett says Upstate Home Care is the only agency in the Upstate with a Vet Assist program. The program provides services to veterans and spouses without them having to pay out of pocket.
