GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

With the start of the 2016-2017 school year around the corner, district officials in Greenville County said finding enough bus drivers to meet demand is proving problematic.

Currently, the district is short about 45 drivers. They said they have enough drivers to fill each route, but if even one driver calls in sick, routes will be delayed.

"When a bus breaks down, or a driver calls in sick, then the route is going to be late," said Nancy Benson, safety training specialist for the district.

District spokeswoman Beth Brotherton said the job offers benefits even at a minimum of just 30 hours per week. Recently, the district worked to allow for nearly $14 an hour for starting drivers. Still, she said the challenge the district has always had is keeping good bus operators.

"This is a slightly different job," she said. "We are asking people to carry a different kind of cargo. And I would imagine that there are some people who perhaps don't have the right personality or the right fit to carry such precious cargo."

To qualify for the job, drivers must obtain a commercial driver license, which can be obtained through the district. They must also have no more than four points on their driving record.

Benson said she does not think the district will be able to get 45 new drivers before the start of the school year, but she encouraged anyone who thinks they may be qualified and who loves to work with children to apply.
