GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

When he became principal of Carolina High six years ago, Michael Delaney started a tradition.

That year and every year since, the school holds their annual senior night.

"It's just something we do. It's become a tradition for us. It's become a motivator for them to understand that we're going to support them, but they need to do whatever it takes in order to be successful and graduate," said Principal Michael Delaney.

Since becoming principal, Delaney says, he's had one goal in sight. He wants all of his students to graduate.

When he first took on the role, the school's graduation rate was forty-eight percent. In six years, the rate has risen to seventy-three percent.

"Improving a graduation rate is great, but we're only improving it because we care about each individual that comes in the doors. We want to make sure that they graduate, are successful and that they graduate on time," said Delaney.

At the end of senior night, students are asked to sign a graduation gown to show their commitment to graduating on time.

"It's a great commitment for me because I've been through a lot. I had bad grades when I was in middle school and elementary school. When I got to Carolina, I pushed myself to be here," said Carolina High senior, Jamarkus Cousar.

The gown will hang in the school for students to see, as a reminder of their journey. Principal Delaney will wear the gown on graduation day when he hands out their diplomas. Delaney says he hopes to see all of his students walk across the stage in June.
