CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team sent crisis-trained chaplains to Charlotte after violent protests erupted in the wake of a deadly officer-involved shooting.

More than 20 chaplains participated in the initial response.

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association said 16 law enforcement officials were reportedly injured in riots overnight.

“This is a tragic situation, which has resulted in a lot of pain, mourning and anger. This has spilled over into additional violence overnight,” said Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team. “Our goal is to offer a ministry of presence, being in the area to offer peace and hope into a dark and difficult time.”

Munday said the response is the fourth time this year the team has been present after officer-involved shootings or civil unrest, including in Dallas and Baton Rouge.
