UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Emergency dispatchers said workers at the Ralph Gillespie plant on Lower Fairforest Church Road were evacuated after heavy smoke was reported Thursday morning.

Multiple fire departments were called in to investigate. The plant is a division of Milliken.

Courtney Edwards, director of corporate communications for Milliken, said the fire started mid-morning on one of the production lines.

The entire plant was evacuated and closed for the day. All 50 onsite employees were evacuated and are safe.

On Monday, a company spokesperson said 17 total fire departments responded to the scene from Spartanburg and Union counties. Due to the firefighting teams, the company said the building and plant equipment was relatively undamaged.

"We are incredibly grateful for the brave men and women who make up our local fire departments," Milliken & Company President and CEO Joe Salley said of their efforts on Thursday. "Our community is a better place because of their hard work and commitment to safety. To every dispatcher, firefighter and chief who helped save our plant on Thursday, thank you."
