SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Wofford College will hold a "topping out" celebration for the new Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Tuesday at the construction site on campus.

The indoor arena is being built next to Gibbs Stadium. The 123,000 -square-foot facility will include a 3,400-seat basketball arena and a 500-seat volleyball court and is expected to be completed in fall 2017. It will replace Benjamin Johnson Arena for basketball and volleyball games and also be used for non-athletic functions, such as commencement and concerts.

Funding for the building was provided by Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, a 1959 Wofford graduate and member of the Wofford Board of Trustees.

Tuesday’s celebration, set to begin at 11 a.m., will honor the construction crews who have worked on the building since the groundbreaking in October 2015.

During the festivities, the workers and other members of the Wofford campus community will sign a ceremonial steel beam that will be displayed in the finished building.

A campus-wide luncheon will follow the ceremony.

The public is invited to attend the celebration, according to a news release from the college.
