GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate elementary school joined schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Tuesday.

Legacy Charter Elementary School students took to the streets in observance of the event. Students walked alongside parents, teachers, administrators and community leaders from the school to Swamp Rabbit Trail, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Participants arrived back at the school in time for classes.

The event was supported by the South Carolina Safe Routes to School Resource Center, a federally-funded program under the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The Walk to School events are observed in the U.S. and 40 other countries around the world. The purpose of the walks are to help create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
