CAMPOBELLO, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A manhunt after an Upstate armed robbery ended in a deadly shooting on Friday, September 30.

The Greenville County Sheriff said dispatch received a 911 call about an armed robbery at the Dollar General store on Highway 11 around 10 a.m. The store is located near the Greenville-Spartanburg county line.

Deputies said an employee told them a man in dark clothing entered the store with a handgun and demanded money.

When responding officers arrived on scene, the suspect reportedly fled on foot. A manhunt ensued with K-9, SWAT and air support teams assisting in the search.

Spartanburg School District One confirmed that several schools in Landrum were on lockdown Friday afternoon due to the suspect on the loose. District officials shared that school lockdowns were lifted around 1:05 p.m.

Just before 1 p.m., deputies said they received reports of a male matching the suspect's description was spotted on Link Drive in Spartanburg County.

A chase ensued, according to deputies, during which time a K-9 handler and partner closed in the suspect. He reportedly began to fight with the deputy and K-9, at which time the handler realized the suspect had a handgun in his possession.

Deputies said the K-9 handler yelled to other members of the search team to notify them the suspect was in possession of a gun.

When one of the members of the team caught up to the deputy, he reportedly fired his service weapon at least once, striking the suspect and "eliminating the threat."

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office identified the decedent as 32-year-old Douglas Marrickus  Rainey of Mt. Vernon Road in Anderson. An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a single gunshot to the head.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office was reportedly handling the active investigation.

On Thursday morning, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said their deputy had been cleared to return to work following the shooting in September.

SLED continues to investigate the incident as is protocol with officer-involved shootings.
