SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said a shooting occurred Friday morning at the scene of a domestic violence incident.

The incident occurred at a residence on Idlewood Court around 11:45 a.m.

Deputies were originally dispatched to the scene in regards to a physical altercation between a couple, but said the call was upgraded to a shooting before they arrived on scene.

According to the Sheriff's Office, 48-year-old James Lee Sarratt was involved in a physical confrontation with a woman with whom he was living. According to arrest warrants, Sarratt hit the victim in the head with a phone and pointed a gun at her in the presence of a child.

A younger couple reportedly tried to intervene and take control of the gun, at which time deputies said Sarratt pointed it at everyone at the scene.

He then is accused of shooting the younger man the stomach. The victim underwent surgery and his condition is unknown.

Deputies said Sarratt tried to argue the shooting was in self defense, but the witness statements didn't support the argument.

He is charged with attempted murder, domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and four counts of pointing and presenting a firearm.
