Greenville Co. agencies ready to assist evacuees

Greenville, NC (FOX Carolina) -

One million people are being evacuated from the coast, and many are headed to the Upstate.

Local agencies aren't 100% sure just how many will end up in Greenville County, but they say they're prepared for the worst.

As South Carolinians brace for Hurricane Matthew's potential land fall, pilots with the Civil Air Patrol were standing by Wednesday to assist agencies across the state. Major Ron Hardgrave said their information is vital for everyone in the state.

"Right now our South Carolina wing, which we are a member of, is providing communication support to the South Carolina Emergency Management Department,” said Hardgrave.

Pilots will perform daily flyovers and photo recon to keep emergency planners up to date on roadways and potential storm damage.

"As the storm comes in, we will be tasked with more of the oversight of the routes,” explained Hardgrave, “Flying over it and making sure there's no traffic jams."

Those evacuees will be escorted by Greenville County deputies to the Upstate. Jay Marett with the Emergency Management Department says they'll be taken care of in the Upstate.

"We're going to be directing them where to go and which shelters,” said Marett.

Deputies will be on-site at evacuation shelters around the area. Then, they will escort people back when the evacuation has been lifted. Marett says they'll also have support in Greenville if there's too many people for them to handle.

Once the storm passes through South Carolina, the Civil Air Patrol will switch gears to disaster relief. Pilots will continue with over-flights across the state along with photo recon missions. They will also provide ground support by getting supplies such as food and blood to the right people.
