Gov. Haley: Not enough people have evacuated ahead of Matthew

COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Gov. Nikki Haley again on Thursday urged people in coastal areas of South Carolina to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Matthew.

Haley said that as of 6 a.m. Thursday 175,000 people had fled their homes in Charleston and Beaufort counties.

“That’s not enough,” Haley said.

Haley said about 250,000 needed to evacuate from those counties.

Evacuations are also scheduled to begin at noon in Horry and Georgetown counties.

The governor said gas stations and pharmacies in the area would be closing ahead of the storm’s arrival, leaving residents with few resources in the midst of the storm if they didn’t leave.

“Fuel up quickly,” Haley told potential evacuees Thursday morning. She said some gas station chains would begin closing stores at noon.

“Residents who don’t leave today are going to realize there’s nothing open, and at that point, there won’t be much we can do to help,” the governor said.

100 Greenville County school buses remained in Charleston on Thursday to aid in evacuations, Haley said. The state had requested 300 buses from the school district earlier in the week.

Meteorologists said they expect the hurricane to hug coastline and not directly make landfall,  but they said storm surges were the major concern, and that they would likely be felt further inland.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate Friday night into Saturday, over the course of about 18 hours, with hurricane force winds on the coast and tropical storm winds further inland. Trees will likely be knocked down and widespread power outages are expected.

Eight to 14 inches of rain is expected to fall and officials said dam owners are urged to lower water levels ahead of the storm, as many dams across the state are still compromised from the 2015 floods.

Haley said another update would come at 6 p.m. Thursday.
