COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

On Thursday, President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in South Carolina due to the threat from Hurricane Matthew.

As the hurricane approaches the East Coast, it is expected to cause a significant impact to the state's coastline due to high winds and storm surge.

Governor Nikki Haley declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, calling for the evacuation of thousands of people from Charleston and surrounding counties.

On Thursday, Obama ordered federal aid to help the state and local response efforts. The order also authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA to coordinate disaster relief efforts.
