As thousands are heading away from the coast, a few people are headed right into the storm.

The Greenville County swift water dive team is an elite group of divers trained for disaster situations.

This is the first time the team has headed out of Greenville County for a rescue mission, but their skills are needed as Hurricane Matthew nears the coast.

Six divers are geared up with rafts and an ATV that will help rescue and evacuate people who are stranded in their homes or caught on flooded roads.

The team trains for situations like Hurricane Matthew and are prepared to rescue people, despite dangerous obstacles, like heavy currents and debris in the water.

The team says they're willing to risk their own lives for people in the state they call home.

"That's the reason all of us get into law enforcement or any kind of emergency services. We really do want to be of help to the community, and be people that our communities can count on, and that have the skills to go down and do these types of things. It's why we do what we do," said dive team commander, Sgt. Mike Decker.
