Help line activated to direct people to SC shelters

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

South Carolina’s Emergency Management Division has activated a help line for South Carolinians seeking emergency shelters as Hurricane Matthew approaches.

The agency said Friday evacuees can call 1-866-246-0133 to be directed to the nearest open emergency shelter anywhere in the state.

The phone system is operational 24 hours a day until South Carolina is no longer in danger.

The American Red Cross said on Friday that 2,700 people in South Carolina were seeking refuge from Hurricane Matthew in evacuation shelters. The relief agency has also activated its Safe and Well system for people to notify their loved ones that they are safe.

“We urge everyone in the storm’s path to evacuate and are working with our partners to provide a safe place for you and your family to stay until the storm passes,” said Ann Wright, executive director for the Red Cross of Upstate SC. “Hurricane Matthew could leave widespread devastation in its wake and untold amounts of need for food, shelter, and help. We are proud to stand alongside our partners to serve those in our community who are being affected by this storm.”
