COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Governor Nikki Haley is urging South Carolina evacuees not to head back to their homes until Monday.

Even though the storm is expected to head away from the coast on Saturday, Haley said officials would not immediately know of all damaged areas and trouble spots. She said that information wouldn’t come until conditions cleared enough to allow the 2,700 SC DOT road maintenance workers to begin investigating and repairing issues on the roads.

Haley said 78 shelters were open across the state as of Saturday morning, housing 6,651 people.

“Now is when the frustration sets in,” Haley said, addressing evacuees.  “Most fatalities and injuries occur after the storm,” she warned.

Haley said she understood that evacuees are worried about their homes and want to get back as quickly as possible, but there were still too many unknowns as of Saturday morning.

“Don’t plan on going home today or tomorrow,” she said.

Haley said the weekend would be spent checking with individual counties about their needs and working to identify problems on roads and bridges.

Haley said officials were also closely watching rivers coming from Upstate to monitor for flooding in downstream areas.

Emergency officials said citizens are asked to stay away from evacuated areas between Hilton Head to North Myrtle Beach until conditions improve and the danger subsides.

Haley also warned of a cyber threat involving e-mails claiming to offer updates on storm conditions and outages.
