GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

From her home in Greer, Sarah Bennett has been mobilizing help for Haiti, a country devastated by Hurricane Matthew last week.

"People's houses...were getting flooded," said Bennett. "And the winds were taking off the roofs that are made of tin."

Bennett grew up in Haiti. Her parents were missionaries there in the 1940's and 1950's. Now, she and her husband run Mission for Haiti, a volunteer organization that helps their beloved second home in times of feast and famine.

"These poor people live out of their gardens and the gardens were totally wiped out," said Bennett, whose group has local officials on the ground currently. "The aftermath of Hurricane Matthew will bring a lot of starvation."

Hurricane Matthew left a trail of destruction with more than a thousand dead and homes destroyed in a nation that's once again torn apart by a natural disaster.

Western North Carolina relief group Samaritan's Purse  also has boots on the ground to help, with another group of volunteers traveling there this week for relief efforts.

"What we are seeing on the ground - the expectation is that those numbers are gonna be rising tremendously," said Jason Edgerton, regional director for Samaritan's Purse.

Both groups stand in need of monetary donations so they can help get clean food, water and supplies to the hurricane's victims.

The destruction is not the only problem, though. Cholera is killing fast because of contaminated food and water sources.

"What we are doing now, is we are preparing food," said Bennett, who said boxes of food is ready to be shipped to the western portion of Haiti, which was the most affected by the storm.
