PENDLETON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown said a woman died while trying to escape from her burning home early Wednesday morning in Pendleton.

The fire was reported just before 4:30 a.m. at a home on Gibson Road.

Firefighters arrived to find the house fully involved. When they were able to put out the flames and enter the residence, McCown said firefighters found the body of 62-year-old Joyce Adams inside a dining room in the front of the house.

Anderson County Fire Chief Jimmy Sutherland said the fire appeared to have started in the bedroom and on the bed.

A cigarette may have sparked the fire. McCown said family members reported that Adams was a heavy smoker.

Adams was alone in the house at the time of the fire. McCown said the victim's husband has been hospitalized at AnMed hospital for more than a week after being injured in a car crash.

McCown said the cause of death is believed to carbon monoxide toxicity and the death is being considered accidental.
