MARION, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The McDowell County Sheriff's Office is helping raise money for the family of fallen officer Tim Brackeen.

Brackeen, a policeman in Shelby, passed away on Sep. 12, two days after he was shot while serving a warrant. He leaves behind a wife, Mikel Brackeen, and 4-year-old daughter Daphney.

“Officer Brackeen is the epitome of a hero,” said McDowell County Sheriff Dudley Greene. “He laid down his life for the people of his community. Nothing we do can bring him back, but, hopefully, this money will lift some of the burden from his family.”

Attorney David Teddy, who developed the idea, said his firm is sending at least 100 ribbons to every sheriff in North Carolina to help distribute them.

They are hoping to collect $5 donations for each ribbon with a goal of raising $100,000 for Brackeen's family by Thanksgiving.

For information about purchasing ribbons, please contact McDowell County Sheriff's Office at 828-652-2235.
