CANTON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Multiple Haywood County schools were placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon.

Associate superintendent Dr. Bill Nolte said around noon, area law enforcement received a call of a "very threatening nature" against Canton Middle School. The school was evacuated to the football field due to the nature of the call.

Pisgah High, Meadowbrook Elementary, Bethel Middle, Bethel Elementary and North Canton Elementary were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Nolte stressed there is no reason at this point to believe anyone is in danger.

"But you don’t know those things when threats come in initially so you have to take extreme caution," he said.

Canton Middle principal Todd Barbee reportedly notified parents about pick-up procedure as soon as possible.

Nolte confirmed law enforcement are using a canine in their sweep of the school but said details about the threat have not been released.

An investigation is ongoing into the incident. The lockdowns were lifted at the end of the school day.

Officers said extra security is expected at the schools and football game on Friday, but classes will continue as normal.
