SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A grassroots fundraiser to help feed local hungry people took place in the Upstate on Saturday.

Attendees of the Hub City Empty Bowls's annual Soup Day were able to select handmade pottery bowls and enjoy a wide selection of gourmet soups in exchange for $15 donations. The unfinished bowls are left at the studio, where they are eventually glazed and fired by experienced volunteers.

The goal is to create about 1,000 bowls each year.

The event which took place at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg brings together first-time potters as well as experienced potters. Afterward, all attendees may enjoy a simple meal of soup, bread, and tea while enjoying live music and fellowship.

Proceeds from the event go towards feeding the hungry at TOTAL Ministries, a local non-profit, faith-based agency that helps citizens who are facing financial crisis.

Hub City Empty Bowls donated $26,000 to TOTAL Ministries last year.
